Again, the fact that it cools down as soon as it hits 75% on the temp gage has me thinking it’s just the thermostat. But I’ve been wrong before. So I looked under the hood after letting it cool off for a day.
I’m no mechanic, but I have my go-tos, like checking for signs of a blown headgasket. The coolant looked nice and green, and my oil was nice and dirty, but not at all chocolatey.
However, I did notice that coolant reservoir is bone dry, and looks like it has been for quite some time?!? Ok. Maybe my temp rose only yesterday because it was the first day over 50 degrees in I don’t know how long, and it was a long, tough commute. That little engine has to work very hard.
Anyway, I already have a spare water pump and thermostat on hand due to my parts hoarding. So I’ll be replacing both and just putting in new coolant. Luckily I’ve done this on my bronze Tercel so it’ll be much less daunting than the first time.

Sounds like a good plan, don’t forget to replace with authentic 33 year old Toyota coolant.

Toyoda is the original and correct spelling. Over the years it changed to Toyota. There’s a story behind it, but not going to type it all out here.

I know the man behind the company is Toyoda but I thought the cars were always Toyota.

OH oh, I was at harbor freight and they had the inclinometer gauge with some other things attached for 17 bucks. Thought of you immediately when I saw it!

IIRC, the 3A originally came with Toyota red coolant. Mixing red and green results in a nasty gooey mix- so if the coolant system was not flushed extremely well, there’s a chance that parts of the radiator could have some sludge.
Empty reservoir could mean a number of things, but the level of fluid inside the radiator is more important.

Captain obvious checking in but wtf does it look like from underneath? And no, it’s not your thermostat. No coolant = overheating engine. Thermostat has nothing to do with it. That is unless your thermostat stopped working, you overheated and warped the engine and lost your coolant after the fact.
You’ve got a leaking hose, friend. Guaranteed.

Time for a coolant system pressure test, maybe.
Advance loans a decent one.

Symptoms of a thermostat would be overheating or underheating. You probably have an air pocket in the system. Try bleeding the system before throwing parts at it.
